Champions League blow means Newcastle could now make transfer U-turn

Newcastle United’s Champions League campaign ended rather flatly.

While there were certainly moments to savour as Newcastle dealt blows in a particularly difficult Champions League group, it just wasn’t enough.

Now, attentions turn back to the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s side have it all to do to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition once again and will surely need signings in the January transfer window in order to support their challenge.

Still, missing out on the added revenue of European competition is likely to have an impact on what the club can spend.

Indeed, one position could now be overlooked.

Newcastle transfer news: Goalkeeper no longer a priority

Despite links with the likes of David de Gea and Hugo Lloris after Nick Pope’s injury, any plans to sign a new goalkeeper could be shelved.

According to talkSPORT, the fact the club do not have Europe to contend with means the signing of a new stopper is no longer seen as a priority.

With a midfielder and a forward also reportedly under consideration, you could forgive Newcastle for not going crazy to sign an expensive stand-in for Pope, particularly given FFP concerns.

Still, not looking for a potentially cheap option to replace Pope in the short-term could prove costly.

Martin Dubravka has not exactly covered himself in glory since Pope’s injury, while Loris Karius has not played for the club since the shock turn of events that led him to play in the Carabao Cup final.

Mark Gillespie, meanwhile, has barely played for the club at all.

With that in mind, not attempting to try and pick up a veteran on a cheap deal is a risk. That may be easier said than done of course but not strengthening does leave Howe light for a long time.
