Newcastle United may be into the semi-final of the Carabao Cup now, but the tough challenge of playing Man City over two legs is up next.
They left it late last night, but Newcastle United beat Fulham 2-1 with an injury-time winner from Lewis Miley sending the Magpies through to the next round.
What’s your early prediction? Are we set to return to Wembley?
Tough semi-final draw but you can't write us off in this competition 👀
The Carabao Cup holders are marching on and hoping to retain their title, but Eddie Howe and his players will know that facing Man City next is about as difficult as it gets.
Newcastle will play at St. James’ Park on 12 January 2026, before a return trip to the Etihad on 2 February. So, will the Magpies make it to the final, or will they fall at this next hurdle? The fans have spoken.

Newcastle United fans think cup run is over
As news of the semi-final draw for Newcastle arrived, supporters took to social media to share their feelings about what lies ahead. It’s safe to say most of them are a little bit worried.
One fan wrote, “It was nice being champions while it lasted,” while another said, “Just let them have the place in the final.”
A third added: “Having to play away at the Etihad… see you in 2026/27.” A similar sentiment was shared by a couple of other fans who suggested Newcastle “focus on the league” and the idea of “FA Cup it is then.”
One supporter even claimed “this was literally the worst draw we could have had.”
It wasn’t all negative, though. One fan was tentatively hopeful, writing: “Better to face City in the semis than the final, but our record against them doesn’t inspire confidence.”
Others were more defiant and clearly have a lot of belief in the team to get the job done.
“Don’t write this tie off. We beat them here in the league and they have vulnerabilities too. We proved we could do the impossible last season by beating Arsenal home and away and Liverpool in the final,” one replied.
Another added: “Why are we concerned? We literally beat City the last time we played them plus we have more attacking options this time and no doubt we will have returning defenders by then!”
Who was your MOTM against Fulham? For what it’s worth, I thought Jacob Ramsey was very good 😍😍
Newcastle’s record against Man City
Indeed, Newcastle did beat City just weeks ago. A 2-1 win at St. James’ Park came courtesy of a Harvey Barnes double, and the Magpies will need just that again in the first leg next month.
The bigger picture is not looking pretty, though. Of the 15 games prior to that last meeting, City have lost just once to Newcastle — in the League Cup, funnily enough. There have been 11 City wins during that run, including a 4-0 win and 5-0 win at the Etihad, and another 4-0 win at St. James’ Park.
Whether it’s home or away, Man City always have the ability to seriously hurt a team. Newcastle will have to be at their best, but that’s the whole point of the latter stages of any cup competition.
A positive result in the home leg will help matters, but having the likes of Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, and Lewis Hall fit for the game at the Etihad will be absolutely crucial.
