The Carabao Cup quarter final between Newcastle United and Fulham went to the wire, but the Magpies are into the next round once again.

Despite Fulham making the stronger start at St. James’ Park it was Newcastle United who took the lead via Yoane Wissa’s first goal for the Magpies. It couldn’t have been any easier for him, really, with the ball put on a plate after an error from the Cottagers’ keeper.

The away team responded well, though, and some shoddy defending out wide and in the middle allowed Sasa Lukic to head home an equaliser just six minutes after Wissa’s strike.

Who was your MOTM against Fulham? For what it’s worth, I thought Jacob Ramsey was very good 😍😍

Newcastle came out in the second half and showed much more control and composure, dominating possession and creating chances. Clearly, Eddie Howe’s half-time team talk struck a chord.

The players huffed and puffed but Fulham kept them out until the 92nd minute, when Lewis Miley headed home the winner to send Newcastle through.

Newcastle United player ratings

Aaron Ramsdale – 6

Impressed with the way Ramsdale came out of his box and played with the ball at his feet at times. Didn’t really have a lot to deal with apart from the Fulham goal. Claimed a high ball late on to calm the nerves at a crucial time.

Lewis Miley – 8

Coped pretty well at right-back and proved once again how valuable and versatile he can be. Stayed calm in a couple of tricky situations. Grew into the game in the second half, playing slightly higher up and more centrally at times. Stepped up when it mattered to force the corner and head the winner home.

Malick Thiaw – 6

Won pretty much all of his duels, looked comfortable on the ball, and didn’t really put a foot wrong. At the same time, didn’t do anything particularly outstanding. Did well to deal with a tricky ball into the box, heading clear of danger.

Fabian Schar – 6

His cross-field ball to feed Jacob Murphy was sublime and it’s Schar we should thank for that opening goal, really. Could have done better to mark Lukic for the Fulham goal though.

Tino Livramento – 4

Endured a really poor first half full of misplaced passes and loose touches, and looked really nervous on the left-hand side. The fact he had to keep cutting inside onto his right foot was a real problem. Spurned a really good goalscoring opportunity. Ended up coming off injured in the second half.

Joe Willock – 5

Made some tidy passes early on but faded out of the game. Was eventually taken off partway through the second half and wasn’t particularly missed.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Played with composure and maturity. Operated with slightly more defensive discipline than we are used to seeing from him, largely due to Jacob Ramsey being the man tasked with getting forward. Tidied up a few dangerous scenarios and carried the ball forward nicely, too.

Jacob Ramsey – 5

Misplaced a few passes and didn’t seem to play with any intensity. Became rather anonymous as the game went on. Will be disappointed not to have done more with a rare opportunity in the team.

Jacob Murphy – 6

Played an inviting ball across the box for Wissa’s goal. Was a nuisance down the right side. However, he lost his man down the wing in the build-up for Fulham’s equaliser.

Yoane Wissa – 7

His goal may have looked simple enough but Wissa did well to be in the right place at the right time and kept his composure to put it away. Could have had another couple in the first half. A very promising full debut indeed.

Harvey Barnes – 8

Looked very lively as always. Constantly looking to make things happen when he picks up the ball. Offered some great deliveries into the box. Was the only Newcastle player who really threatened to split the Fulham defence with his passing and dribbling.

Who should replace Tino Livramento at full-back after his recent injury?!

You couldn't make this up 😡

Newcastle United substitutes

Nick Woltemade – 7

Came on and clearly had a point to prove. Showed good footwork in the box, did well when dropping deeper and made a real difference.

Sandro Tonali – 7

The best outing Tonali has had in weeks. Adapted to the flow of the game quickly. Some neat, simple passes to open up the game.

Alex Murphy – 6

Wasn’t really tested after coming on but did his job well.

Anthony Gordon – 6

Arrived late to the game and didn’t have much of an impact.

Anthony Elanga – 7

Looked better in that ten-minute cameo than he has in almost any other Newcastle game. Tidy passing down the wing to interplay with Miley and Woltemade. Looked hungry and sharp.
