Callum Wilson’s contract situation at Newcastle United has received very few updates, but Eddie Howe has now commented on his future.
As it stands, the 33-year-old will be leaving the club this summer upon the expiry of his contract, ending a five-year star with the Magpies.
Callum Wilson was an integral part of keeping Newcastle United in the Premier League while Steve Bruce was in charge and a huge player in their season, which saw them finish fourth and return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
However, injuries and the sensational form of Alexander Isak have seen Wilson become a second-choice striker over the last two seasons. In the 2024/25 campaign, Wilson has started just one game for the Magpies in the Premier League, while failing to score in any of his 14 appearances.
The feeling is that Wilson will look to leave Newcastle this summer, with the hope being that an offer comes from abroad. However, nothing has come to fruition yet.
With Wilson’s future still up in the air, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has commented on what he wants to do with the striker.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe issues fresh Callum Wilson update
With Newcastle returning to Europe next season, Paul Mitchell will be tasked with bringing a new striker to the club who can come in for Isak, where required. That could leave Wilson as the third or even fourth choice, depending on what the plan for William Osula is.
With four games left in the Premier League season, reports have claimed Newcastle staff have told Wilson to prove himself to earn a new contract, despite the suggestion that he is willing to leave.
Speaking to the press ahead of Newcastle’s important game against Brighton on Sunday, Howe was asked about Wilson’s future at the club.
“He’s very much in my plans going forward. We have four games to go & he’s a huge part of that. I think he’s looked better & better in recent weeks.
“Physically, I see the Callum Wilson of old. He has stayed fit for a long period of time, which has been brilliant to see.
“I think on his long-term future, let’s wait and see how he performs and how he continues to look.”
The final comment from Howe makes for bleak reading from Wilson’s perspective; the boss clearly still has his doubts over whether he has what it takes to play for the club next season.

One Newcastle United player will definitely be leaving this summer
While a lot of the attention has been put on Wilson’s future, another player will quietly leave the Magpies after a torrid five-year spell.
Jamal Lewis was signed for £12m by Bruce in 2020 but failed to make a lasting impression under him or Howe. Lewis played just twice under Howe during the 2022/23 season before being loaned to Watford for the 2023/24 campaign.
Lewis made a surprise loan move to Sao Paulo in 2024, where he made a good start. However, Lewis picked up an injury on loan and was forced to cut his spell in Brazil short.
It has been confirmed that Lewis will leave Newcastle at the end of the season, with his contract running out this summer.
In a 2024 interview, Lewis admitted he knew his time at Newcastle was up following a discussion with Howe.
