Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has hinted at where the club aim to finish next season. He discussed this with co-host Michail Antonio on the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast‘.
Antonio commented that he thought Eddie Howe could struggle next season with the expectations due to the fact he’s done so well since his arrival. He’s worried that the club and some fans might expect too much from them.
However, Wilson argued that it’s still early days in the new ownership and the club is rebuilding. He stated, “It’s a building process, yeah we’ve been taken over and yeah we’re trying to finish in the top ten this year.
“I think next year will probably be the same, trying to sustain that level.
“We’re not getting carried away as players and as a club, to say we’re gonna be challenging in Europe.”

Antonio’s comment is the classic idea that Newcastle fans expecting too much, so fair play to Wilson for playing it down
The idea that Newcastle fans expect too much is nothing new. For whatever reason, some fans and pundits believe that every Toon fan expects Champions League football.
When in reality we just didn’t want to be relegated and maybe build a team good enough to push for the top ten. This school of thought usually comes from people with no connection to the club.
That was why Rafa Benitez was so beloved on Tyneside. His aim was to build the club into being the best of the rest. You can tell he wanted more after finishing 10th and 13th in the league.

To an extent, I understand that Michail Antonio is right that it’ll be hard for Eddie Howe to replicate this season. But even if Newcastle finish slightly below where they finished this season but still in a top ten place. I don’t see how many can complain about that.
Also, there will always be some fans who are never satisfied. But they’re not the majority, any Magpies fan expecting Champions League next season needs to get a bit of perspective.
Additionally, Callum Wilson deserves credit. He clearly understands the club and knows the actual expectations of the fans. From a Newcastle perspective, it’s nice to see him show more of his personality on the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast.
