Bruno Guimaraes names the Newcastle United player who has ‘surprised’ him

It was a real surprise when Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle United in January.

The midfielder was the Magpies’ marquee signing – a real statement addition by the new owners.

Bruno cost an initial £35million from Lyon, swapping European football for a relegation battle. If things had gone badly, he could have been a Championship player with a World Cup on the horizon.

But things didn’t go badly. If anything, they couldn’t have gone better. After being slowly bedded into the team, Bruno made an incredible splash in black and white.

He’s already been involved in so many special moments, which is incredible considering he’s only been a Toon player for half a season.

It hasn’t been surprising to see Bruno excel for Newcastle. However, it is somewhat surprising just how good he is. His ability is frightening at times.

Speaking of surprises, the Magpies’ number 39 has named the player who has surprised him since he joined the club.

Joelinton has ‘surprised’ Bruno

Bruno has built up a lovely relationship with fellow Brazilian Joelinton. However, Bruno has admitted that he didn’t expect the club record signing to be as good as he is in midfield.

“Joelinton has helped me a lot,” he told the Shields Gazette.

“I spend a lot of time with him and on the pitch we work very well together I think.

“Since I arrived, he has surprised me [as a midfielder], he works so hard.”

You’re not the only one Bruno… I don’t think any of us thought Joelinton would be this good as a midfielder.

The 25-year-old was once a struggling striker in black and white, and now he’s an all action midfield general. It’s hard to believe he’s playing in a new position. He seems perfect for the role.

Joelinton’s physicality makes him so difficult to play against, while he seems to be benefitting from not spending his afternoons with his back to goal.

The Brazilian duo have built up a great understanding, and it’s exciting to see what they can achieve when the new season kicks off.

Thank goodness Ciaran Clark got that red card against Norwich!
