It has been a perfect start to World Cup qualifying for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
After being reduced to tears out in Qatar, Bruno and Brazil will be looking to improve at the 2026 tournament, and have started qualifying with two wins out of two.
After beating Bolivia 5-1, Bruno and co followed that up with a much tougher victory away from home. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, they beat Peru 1-0 in Lima.
However, it was very nearly a draw. Luckily, Brazil were rescued by a late Marquinhos header. He scored the only goal of the game in the 90th minute.
The goal gave the Selecao back-to-back wins in dramatic fashion, but it was nearly much more comfortable thanks to Bruno.

Bruno Guimaraes denied ‘beautiful’ assist for Brazil
Brazil had to rely on a late goal on Tuesday night, having been denied by VAR earlier in the game. They had two goals disallowed for offside against Peru, one of which was setup by Newcastle‘s midfield superstar.
Midway through the first half, it looked like Bruno had got himself an assist. Occupying a position just outside of the box in the right channel, Bruno delivered a wonderful first time cross in the direction of Richarlison. The delivery was described as ‘beautiful‘ by Brazilian website Globo.
It truly was beautiful, and it was met perfectly by the Tottenham Hotspur forward. It looked like Richarlison’s powerful header had given Brazil the lead, only for VAR to chalk it off.
The decision actually took seven minutes to make, which just shows how tight it was. Sadly for Richarlison, he was denied a goal for his country, while Bruno was robbed of an extraordinary assist.

While the decision went against him, the delivery from Newcastle’s number 39 was outstanding, and once again showed what he can do higher up the pitch. It came down the right, a position he would likely occupy more in a Toon shirt was he not deployed as a number six.
It is food for thought for Eddie Howe, who will be desperate to get more out of Bruno in the coming weeks as he looks to solve his midfield conundrum at St James’ Park.
