Newcastle United are on the road once again in the Champions League, as the Toon Army descends on Dortmund.

Eddie Howe’s side are looking for revenge after losing 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund at St James’ Park, with the result dumping them down to third in Group F of the Champions League.

The defeat at home to Dortmund was a difficult one. We came agonizingly close to grabbing an equaliser, with Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon striking the woodwork.

Overall, Dortmund were the better side. They completely nullified the crowd, which was hugely disappointing after how good the atmosphere was against Paris Saint-Germain.

But you could only hear the Dortmund supporters at St James’ Park, as their drums echoed throughout the stadium.

Now Dortmund will be the home team, as Newcastle prepare to play at Signal Iduna Park. It will be a cauldron of noise, and one that Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck believes will give them an advantage.

Nico Schlotterbeck comments on the Newcastle fans

Ahead of Borussia Dortmund vs Newcastle United, Schlotterbeck spoke to Dortmund’s official website about the atmosphere they experienced at St James’ Park and what to expect inside Signal Iduna Park.

“It was incredible how our fans showed up in Newcastle,” he said.

“The stadium was very loud to begin with, but we played well and before long you could only hear the chants from our fans.

“I don’t think you’ll even be able to hear the Newcastle fans when we’re at home, because our fans create such an unbelievable atmosphere.

“If we have that support behind us, we’ll have a good game. Hopefully that will give us the extra push we need to get the win.”

It will be an incredible atmosphere against Borussia Dortmund

Schlotterbeck’s assessment of St James’ Park is correct. By the end, all you could hear was the Dortmund supporters. That was testament to their performance, as they got their first Champions League win of the season.

Now the German defender is backing his team’s fans to deliver once again and completely drown out the travelling Newcastle support.

But the Magpies will be backed by a loud and proud Toon Army, who have travelled to Germany in their thousands to support the team. It looks like they have been having great fun so far, and hopefully that continues when the game kicks off this evening.

No matter how good the Newcastle support is, Schlotterbeck is not expecting to hear them because of how loud the Dortmund fans can be. It will be up to Howe’s team to silence them, which will be extremely difficult.
