Newcastle United have made a second bid for Benjamin Sesko in the region of £78million, a decision from RB Leipzig is expected this week.

With the future of Alexander Isak looking bleak, the Magpies have taken matters into their own hands to ensure a replacement is at the club if he leaves.

Newcastle United have turned their attention to Benjamin Sesko, a player who has been linked with a move to Tyneside since 2022. Their interest has now reached its peak, and a fresh offer has been placed after their first bid was rejected.

Reports state that Newcastle’s offer is in the region of £78million, blowing their existing record transfer fee out the window. The bid is yet to be accepted, but there is hope that RB Leipzig will accept Newcastle’s latest approach. However, the final decision is now down to Leipzig, who have also received a bid for Sesko from Manchester United, which is lower than what Newcastle have offered.

Jamie Reuben held talks with Sesko and Leipzig on Monday, during which the Newcastle owner was encouraged that the striker is open to joining. Should he join, Sesko will make history on Tyneside, but not because of the transfer fee.

Benjamin Sesko will be Newcastle’s second-ever Slovenian player

After the bids, Sesko has said yes to Man United and Newcastle, so it is now a waiting game to see which team he will join. Fans will be hoping it is Newcastle, rather than their Premier League rivals.

Sesko is a Slovenian international and even led the line during a 2024 European Championship game against England. He failed to find the back of the net in that game, but Sesko has scored an impressive 16 goals in 41 international appearances.

The 22-year-old will be making history by becoming the second-ever Slovenian player to play for the Magpies, but the first was attacking midfielder Haris Vuckic.

Vuckic joined the Magpies in 2009 from NK Domzale and broke into the first team under Chris Hughton during the Magpies’ 2009/10 campaign in the Championship.

He also found a lot of game time under Alan Pardew, who took a shine to him. Vuckic even scored during a Europa League game against Atromitos during the 2012/13 campaign.

Sesko will undoubtedly be the bigger name, but Vuckic laid the groundwork for the next Slovenian to join the club.

Pardew thinks Sesko will be a success at Newcastle. He likely had the same feelings towards Vuckic when he gave him the chance at the Magpies.

Sadly, things would not work out for Vuckic at Newcastle, with his move to FC Twente being confirmed in 2017 after a series of loan spells across the UK.

Vuckic found success at Twente, scoring 11 goals in 25 Eredivisie appearances before moving to Real Zaragoza. Stints at Rijeka and Thai club Buriram United followed before Vuckic finally returned to Domzale in 2024.

Now 32, Newcastle fans will surely be wondering what could have been for Vuckic if given more time to impress on Tyneside.
