When Newcastle signed Haris Vuckic in 2009, it seemed as though they’d signed a star in the making.

The Slovenian was regarded as one of the top young talents in Europe and here he was, a Newcastle United player.

10 years later, things haven’t quite gone as anticipated. Now aged 27, it finally looks as if Vuckic has found his feet as a professional footballer. But sadly, he’s not doing it in the black and white of Newcastle.

He left the Magpies for good in 2017, heading to the Netherlands to sign for FC Twente. His career has been blighted by injury, and that’s been no different at Twente.

He missed all of last season with a knee injury, but the attacking midfielder is back now and arguably better than ever. He’s played eight Eredivisie games so far this season, scoring four times and providing one assist.

He’s already half way to his best ever tally, which came during a loan spell away from Newcastle.

Vuckic was one of five Magpies sent to Rangers in February 2015. He thrived north of the border, scoring eight league goals in 15 appearances. That was one of five loan spells Vuckic had away from St James’ Park, but sadly the only one where he really performed.

In a Newcastle shirt, Vuckic had opportunities but it was injury that ultimately spoilt his time as a Geordie. He played 19 times for the first-team, scoring once in a Europa League game against Atromitos.

It’s a real shame that things didn’t work out at Newcastle for him. He looked like a real talent and certainly excited some fans with his limited performances. Alas, it’s great to see him performing in one of Europe’s top divisions and playing with a smile on his face.
