Ben Foster can see exactly why Newcastle United fans love £40m player after Manchester City draw

There are plenty of heroes in this Newcastle United team.

Eddie Howe has created an incredibly likeable side at St James’ Park, with the fans completely behind a group of players who understand what it means to represent a club like Newcastle United.

Bruno Guimaraes is a world class midfielder, but he has the passion and work ethic to match. You would think he was a local lad given the way that he resonates with the Newcastle United fans.

The 26-year-old is an example of bringing the right person to the club, rather than just the right player. It is about how they connect with the culture and adapt to the region, as well as what they do on the pitch.

Bruno is a Geordie, and so is Anthony Gordon. He is another Newcastle United player who just ‘gets it’, and he showcased that yet again on Saturday during the Magpies’ 1-1 draw with Manchester City.

Ben Foster understands Newcastle fans’ love for Anthony Gordon

The 23-year-old played up front on Saturday, filling in for the injured Alexander Isak.

Gordon did very well up front, and looked back to his best after a slow start to the season. Things had not been going his way, but Saturday was a typical Anthony Gordon performance.

The England international seriously impressed Ben Foster, who can see exactly why Gordon is so popular on Tyneside.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Football Fill-In podcast, Foster was asked by co-host Tom Ochoa if Gordon is a hero at Newcastle United.

“Absolutely, and you know why, especially in the North East, especially at Newcastle,” he said.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve. He will give you 110% every single game, work his socks off. He’ll get back, he’ll smash people. He scores goals, he gets the crowd going by geeing everyone up.

“That, in the north, is the most important thing. They want to see ability, flair and technique, but they want to, first and foremost, see somebody work hard with a smile on their face and that’s exactly what Anthony Gordon does.”

Gordon set to commit his best years to Newcastle United with contract extension

As Foster says, Gordon blends all of the attributes that are required to be a Newcastle United hero.

He is obviously immensely talented, and fans love it when he uses his incredible speed to burst beyond defenders.

However, it is just as exciting when he smashes into a challenge and gives supporters something to cheer.

He is the type of player you want to get behind, and it looks like Newcastle United fans will be doing that for a good while longer.

That is because Gordon is on the brink of signing a new contract with Newcastle. Negotiations advanced last week, and the Toon number 10 is set to extend his stay at St James’ Park.

Importantly, Gordon’s new contract will not include a release clause, which is a big positive for Toon fans who want to see the £40million man remain on Tyneside for a very long time.

Gordon took centre stage before kick-off on Saturday, with the winger the subject of Wor Flags’ pre-match display. It was a wonderful moment, as Newcastle fans got the chance to show Gordon some love ahead of him committing his future to the club.
