Nick Pope has joined Newcastle United’s injury list this week, but Eddie Howe is slowly starting to get some players back to fitness.
We have seen Alexander Isak thrive after recovering from his groin injury, while Miguel Almiron’s hamstring appears to be holding up after he was forced off against Bournemouth.
It has also been claimed that Sven Botman is set to return to training, which is a huge boost following a lengthy layoff for the 23-year-old. He has not played since the 8-0 win over Sheffield United, missing the Magpies’ last 14 games.
And now a further update from the Athletic’s Chris Waugh suggests that another Newcastle player could potentially return from his injury this week as well.
Chris Waugh provides encouraging injury update on Sean Longstaff
Speaking on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, Waugh provided an exciting update on the status of Sean Longstaff, who has missed Newcastle’s last three games with an ankle injury.
“I think there is an outside chance that possibly Sean Longstaff may be in and around by later this week,” he said.
“But Eddie Howe has been quite coy about that.”

Newcastle need Longstaff back from injury
It would be great if Longstaff can return to the fold this week. He is a pivotal player for Eddie Howe, even if Lewis Miley has excelled in the absence of the 26-year-old.
There was hope that Longstaff would be back for Man United last weekend, but that did not happen. It did not matter either, as the midfield that Eddie Howe selected were absolutely dominant.
But the Toon boss could do with getting some more options in reserve, so potentially getting Longstaff back in the very near future is brilliant news.
Newcastle continue to play twice a week for the rest of the year, which means Howe needs to be able to rotate his side. But he has been robbed of that opportunity over the past week, with his bench largely being made up of goalkeepers and kids.
But that could slowly be about to change, with Botman and Longstaff potentially nearing a return to fitness.
