After a nightmare spell in Belgium, it’s refreshing to see Antonio Cordero getting on the pitch and getting some minutes straight away for Cadiz.

The Newcastle United youngster was sent to Westerlo in the summer but failed to make an impact in Belgium and barely played.

Our first CONFIRMED deal of 2026! How badly does our loan system need a revamp, by the way?! 😡

Poor Cordero has wasted months at Westerlo…

Thankfully, the decision was made to recall Antonio Cordero from that loan spell and the Magpies immediately sent him back to Spain to join Liga 2 side Cadiz.

It was the first deal Newcastle confirmed this month, and it looks like it’s already working out for the best as the young winger has already been given his debut at his new club.

Antonio Cordero comes on as a sub for Cadiz

Cadiz were held to a 2-2 draw by Deportivo on Sunday evening. Interestingly, Deportivo were linked with Cordero before his move to Cadiz, and now he’s turned out against them.

He had to settle for a place on the bench, but the 19-year-old was introduced with 38 minutes to go, replacing Cadiz captain Brian Ocampo.

While Cordero didn’t necessarily do anything too meaningful, it’s worth noting Cadiz were 2-1 down when he entered the fray and they ended up pulling a goal back with five minutes to go.

As per Sofascore, Cordero completed all ten of his passes in the game, but he did fail to meet his target with all three of his crosses.

He was successful with one of his three dribbles and had 21 touches of the ball. Cordero did lose possession six times, though.

To say he’s a fairly lightweight winger, though, Cordero did get stuck in. He registered three ball recoveries and won two of his five ground duels.

This is already a positive step for Cordero

Obviously, it’s early days, but this is a good step in the right direction for Cordero. He played just over 100 minutes across eight appearances in Belgium. He’s already closing in on that figure after just one brief cameo for Cadiz.

While Cordero said he had learned things at Westerlo, he will be keen to put that period behind him and show what he can do in Spain.

We all know Cordero will be more confident and comfortable there. It’s one of the main reasons Ross Wilson arranged the deal, to help Cordero get back on the right track.

Hopefully this is the first of many appearances over the next five to six months, and we see the real Cordero back on Tyneside ready to make an impact next season.
