Antonio Cordero gives Eddie Howe a major dilemma after opening Under-19 Euro display

Newcastle United had several players out on international duty, with the likes of Sandro Tonali and Dan Burn impressing.

The number of stars playing for their country is a subtle nod to the brilliant job Eddie Howe is doing at the club. There were barely any players being called up for international duty before his arrival.

Dan Burn earned his first England call-up in March, just days before his Carabao Cup final heroics. Elsewhere, the likes of Tino Livramento, Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall have all been given their first England caps after impressing on Tyneside.

With the senior internationals done, it is now time for the young players to show their worth. Lewis Miley will play for England Under-19s in this summer’s European Championships, while Livramento has already shone for England’s Under-21s.

William Osula scored and assisted for Denmark on Thursday night, and it was then the turn of Newcastle’s newest signing, Antonio Cordero. After a positive season with Malaga, Cordero rejected Barcelona to join Newcastle, and has now shown his quality on the international stage with his country.

Newcastle United’s Antonio Cordero puts on a show for Spain U-19s

Newcastle fans think Cordero is similar to Ayoze Perez, a fellow Spaniard who joined the club at a young age and went on to have a successful career. Perez left Newcastle for £30m in 2019, but many are hoping Cordero has a long and prosperous career on Tyneside.

Spain’s Under-19s European Championship campaign kicked off on Friday, and it was a successful one as they beat Denmark 1-0 in Romania.

Cordero started the game, and it was evident that his eye for a pass and dribbling would be hailed at Newcastle. The winger was unlucky not to register a goal contribution for his efforts, but many will be pleased with how well he performed in a big game for his country.

An eye-catching statistic was Cordero’s chance creation. The 18-year-old made a staggering five chances during the game and was assigned to their set-pieces.

Howe will also be pleased to know that Cordero played on the left and right wings during the game, showing his versatility.

Could Newcastle United refrain from loaning Antonio Cordero out?

Upon signing, there was one thing clear about the young winger: Cordero will be loaned out for his first season at Newcastle. He joined from Malaga, a Segunda Division side, so he has played at a good level already. However, Newcastle staff are eager to see how he will perform at a higher level next season.

Cordero has been linked with loans to Ajax as well as clubs in Spain and Germany, though it is likely that his loan move will not be confirmed until after he signs in July.

While a loan looks certain to happen, Howe could theoretically be swayed by his performances in the post-season and choose to keep him at the club to give him a chance of playing first-team football.

That prospect looks unlikely, but the situation could still change in the future to his benefit.

With Cordero impressing for Spain, Newcastle fans will now look to Lewis Miley, who is likely to play with England against Norway on Saturday afternoon.
