Anthony Gordon has extra incentive to do well for Newcastle this season

Big things are expected of Anthony Gordon this season at Newcastle United, and the early signs are very promising.

The winger returned to pre-season training earlier than anticipated after winning the Under-21 European Championship with England, and he has hit the ground running in a black and white shirt.

Gordon has looked sharp and exciting during his pre-season appearances so far. His assist for Miguel Almiron against Chelsea on Wednesday night was really impressive, as he produced a defence-splitting pass to allow the Paraguayan to score on his return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

With the number 10 now on his back, Gordon appears to be revved up for a strong first full season as a Newcastle United player.

Anthony Gordon has Euro 2024 ambition

According to i News, Gordon wants to break into the England squad and represent the Three Lions at Euro 2024 next summer.

The European Championship is due to take place in Germany, with Gareth Southgate’s side looking to go one better after losing the Euro 2020 final.

Having recently tasted success with the England youngsters, Gordon is keen to make the step up to senior level over the next 12 months.

The former Everton man is yet to gain his first England cap, but his exploits with the Under-21s surely mean he is being considered by Southgate and co. He was excellent for Lee Carsley’s side this summer, and won player of the tournament for his efforts.

If he can combine that with a strong Premier League season for Newcastle then he will have a great chance of going to the Euros.

But excelling in a Toon shirt is what will be the biggest factor. If he can get goals and assists for Howe’s side then Southgate will certainly take note, and that could give him a chance of going to Euro 2024 with England next year.
