Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll got himself a new club on Monday.

After a few months as a free agent, Carroll agreed a short-term deal with Championship side Reading.

The 32-year-old signed a two-month deal with the Royals, and is looking forward to the ‘fun and games’ in the second tier.

He’s already impressed his new fans, scoring a stunning goal in his first training session.

But while Carroll will be excited by what’s to come at Reading, his new club have already suffered a blow. And no, it’s not an injury to the former England international.

Points penalty for Reading and Carroll

On Wednesday it was confirmed that Reading have accepted an immediate six-point deduction. This is due to the club exceeding the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability limit.

When Carroll joined Reading, they were 16th with 22 points. Now they’re 19th with 16 points. While it’s not a massive drop, it has put them much closer to the relegation zone.

Reading could also receive another six-point penalty next season if ‘the club cannot fulfil an agreed business plan going forward’.

Carroll has had a tough couple of years. His Newcastle comeback didn’t exactly go to plan.

In his first year he had a few injury problems, and in the second season he just wasn’t picked by Steve Bruce. In total, Carroll managed just one goal during his second spell with the Magpies.

He’ll be hoping to do a lot better in a blue and white shirt, and Reading need his goals even more following their six-point penalty.
