It is fair to say the reaction to Newcastle United’s loss to Manchester City has been mixed.
For most fans, it was an acceptable defeat. It was a tight game, with the better team coming out on top. Newcastle did not embarrass themselves like they have in the past at the Etihad. In fact, they forced Pep Guardiola’s side to play in a different way.
However, for some it was majorly disappointing. Some of Eddie Howe’s players massively underperformed, leading to supporters questioning why they are even in the team.
While everyone is entitled to their opinion, there certainly was an overreaction. It was Manchester City, for goodness sake. They’re the champions of pretty much everything.
Some of the fan reaction angered Bruno Guimaraes, who posted an emotional message on social media that he later deleted.

The Toon Army have rallied round Bruno since, and now club icon Alan Shearer has given his honest verdict on the result.
Alan Shearer thought Man City were just too good for Newcastle
Shearer has been speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, and said Manchester City are the side that has impressed him the most this season so far.
“I’ve been really impressed with how Man City have come out again,” he said.
“After what they did last season, after the news about Kevin de Bruyne…they’ve got one trophy in the bag albeit via penalties.
“Even against Newcastle, I just thought their attitude was amazing. They didn’t give Newcastle a sniff.”

Shearer is spot on
Obviously expectation levels have gone up for Newcastle, but on Saturday we simply came up against a better team. That is all there is to it.
There is no shame in that. After all, Man City won the treble this season.
Guardiola’s side were sensational, playing the game exactly how they wanted to. They restricted Newcastle, whilst creating enough chances of their own to win the game.
If anything, City’s performance should be taken as a compliment. They had to play that well to get a result against Howe’s side.
As Shearer says, their attitude was amazing and they did not give Newcastle an inch. This was not a case of Newcastle being bad, it was Manchester City being really really good.
