Ally McCoist has been speaking on how he thinks Newcastle United supporters will be reacting to rumours linking them with a move for recently sacked Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has constantly been linked with the Newcastle job since the takeover, but news of his sacking from Roma today have amplified the suggestions that he could soon be on his way to the North East.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist claimed that Newcastle fans won’t want Mourinho at their club and are very happy with the job that Eddie Howe is doing despite their recent form.

McCoist says Newcastle supporters are backing Howe over Mourinho

Mourinho’s style of play is the complete opposite of what Howe has been trying to build at Newcastle an hiring the Portuguese manager would be a big step in a different direction, undoing all the positive work that has been done lately.

Howe may be going through a tough spell, the worst since he joined Newcastle, but he still has the support of the fans, the players and most crucially the board.

From what’s been said on social media, it does look like the fanbase are largely in support of Howe, and definitely don’t think hiring Mourinho is the way to go if he is one day sacked.

McCoist was speaking to Newcastle fans after the late defeat to Manchester City on Saturday and claims they were also all in on the former Bournemouth man who deserved to be given time after last season’s success.

On the show, McCoist said: “No. I genuinely don’t think they would. I said yesterday, I think there’s an incredible understanding from the vast majority of Newcastle fans who are appreciative of the fact they were unlucky not to hold on, were beaten by a better side.

“They’re quite happy where they are at this moment in time in terms of their progression under Eddie and the owners.”

Newcastle can still save their season

People are talking like this season has already been a complete disaster and to start looking ahead to next year when there’s more of a chance to succeed, but there’s still plenty to play for.

With the team currently enjoying a two-week break, they’ll be hoping to be fresh to face Fulham in the FA Cup and Aston Villa in the Premier League before going on a run of kinder fixtures in February and March.

The Europa League is still within Newcastle’s reach which would not be a failure of a season at all. Even qualifying for the Conference League would represent progress in terms of where the club was two years ago.

Right now the owners are choosing not to panic and that is good news for Howe who looks to have bought himself enough time to see out the remainder of the season.
