Ally McCoist says Newcastle United have three players ‘as good as’ anyone in the Premier League

Ally McCoist believes Newcastle United are ‘absolutely fantastic’ in one key department.

The Magpies are currently making plans for the summer transfer window. Centre-back is Newcastle’s priority, with Eddie Howe aiming to recruit Fabian Schar’s long-term successor.

Newcastle United also want a right winger, but it remains to be seen who they will target. While Jacob Murphy is performing exceptionally well, it is essential that the Magpies strengthen in that position.

However, one position where Newcastle United are incredibly strong is midfield.

Ally McCoist believes Newcastle United have the best midfield

That is according to Ally McCoist, who has hailed the Magpies’ midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton on TalkSPORT’s YouTube channel.

McCoist was discussing the Premier League’s best pound-for-pound midfield with Ryon Scott-Douglas, who suggested that the honour belongs to Newcastle United.

“Mate, we’re in agreement,” McCoist responded.

“Newcastle’s midfield is as good as anything. What a blend. The partnerships within that midfield.

“Joelinton – there has never been a comeback like that from a player. Centre-forward, felt for him. Looked like a fish out of water. He just wasn’t comfortable. Things weren’t going his way.

“Drops back in and he has become such a key ingredient and figure in that Newcastle team. You’ve got the skills of Bruno and the balance of Tonali. He was out for a period of time but has come back in.

“I just think they’ve been absolutely fantastic.”

Newcastle United may have to address midfield options this summer

Newcastle United have incredible balance in the middle of the park.

Tonali is the orchestrator, while Bruno Guimaraes has become the creator since being given more freedom to play higher up the pitch.

As for Joelinton, he is the powerhouse. His physicality is essential, while his ability to operate in different tactical roles makes him so important for Eddie Howe.

While that trio is unlikely to be broken up this summer, Newcastle’s supporting midfielders could change.

Sean Longstaff’s future is up in the air, with the local lad barely featuring in black and white in recent months.

Elsewhere, Newcastle must make a decision regarding Lewis Miley. He is an exceptional talent, but also someone who has been given limited opportunities this season. The 18-year-old may benefit from a loan move.

If either player leaves, Howe will be eager to sign a replacement. Matteo Guendouzi has been linked with Newcastle, although a deal for the Frenchman feels extremely unlikely at this stage.
