Newcastle United star Allan Saint-Maximin has admitted that the fans are keeping him at St James’ Park.

The French winger joined the Magpies in 2019, arriving for £16.5million from Nice. He signed at a difficult time – tensions were high after Rafa Benitez was allowed to leave.

Then Steve Bruce took his place, and things got even worse. But Saint-Maximin was a bright light during his reign, and often the only beacon of hope.

His performances at times have been scintillating, carrying the club on his back and creating moments of magic out of nothing.

It led to speculation that he could be sold by Mike Ashley for a huge profit. Fortunately that didn’t happen, and now Newcastle have new ambitious owners who are looking to raise standards at the club.

That should bring more out of Saint-Maximin, but the 24-year-old has admitted that one thing has kept him in the North East – the fans.

“I have a really good relationship with the fans. If I didn’t have this relationship with the Newcastle supporters I’d not be here now,” he said.

“So the supporters are really important to me, I love them, I love the club.

“The supporters help me play better. I will never forget that. That’s why I want to do my best to save the team this season.”

A fan favourite and a crowd pleaser

When Saint-Maximin gets the ball, you’re on the edge of your seat. You’re excited to see what he can do, knowing he has the natural ability to get past most players in world football.

It doesn’t always come off, which has led to some disgruntlement in recent weeks. But he’s continuing to find the net and create. He’s enjoying his best season in a Newcastle shirt, so far scoring five Premier League goals and providing four assists.

Newcastle fans love a maverick, particularly one from France. David Ginola, Laurent Robert and Hatem Ben Arfa were all adored on Tyneside.

Saint-Maximin is no different. Hopefully this love affair continues, and he can play an important role in the club’s journey following the change of ownership.
