The extent of Dan Burn’s injury has been revealed, and we can see that he will miss some massive games for Newcastle United in the coming weeks.

Dan Burn’s experience of the Tyne-Wear derby was one to forget, with his short-lived appearance ending in tears as he limped off the pitch before half-time.

After the game, it was reported Burn was struggling to breathe and was rushed to hospital. There, it was revealed the Newcastle United man had fractured his ribs and punctured a lung.

That’s far from ideal for Burn and causes some big issues for Eddie Howe, with his squad now down to the bare bones of just four senior defenders.

Dan Burn could miss next ten games

It is believed Burn will be out for at least six weeks now, with a recovery period that could last all of the festive period and into the end of January.

Looking ahead, that’s some absolutely crucial games Burn will miss. Indeed, there could be at least ten matches he is unavailable for.

That run starts with the Carabao Cup quarter final against Fulham on Wednesday night. Premier League games against Chelsea, Man United and Burnley follow over the hectic festive period.

Into the New Year, Newcastle then have home ties against Crystal Palace and Leeds United, before the FA Cup third round game against Bournemouth on 10 January.

Into what we hope will be the latter stages of Burn’s absence, he’s also very likely to miss league games against Wolves and Aston Villa, plus the crucial Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on 21 January.

PSG return might be best case scenario

The Champions League game against PSG on 28 January could well be the next time we see Dan Burn in action.

However, that could be the best case scenario if the injury is worse than feared. Some reports, including this one from Healthline, suggest punctured lung recovery could take up to eight weeks in some cases.

That’s not taking into account the fact that Burn plays a physical, contact sport. We also need to take into account that Burn will be lacking match sharpness by the time he is passed fit, and there will also be concerns over whether he could suffer a relapse if he comes back too soon.

Here’s hoping he has a speedy recovery and is back in time for the PSG game, but we should be wary of it taking even longer than that. Maybe it’s best Newcastle sign another defender as soon as possible in January to account for that possibility.
