Dan Burn didn’t even last a full half against Sunderland before the Newcastle United defender was forced off the pitch.
Of all the Newcastle United players, few would have wanted to be part of the Tyne-Wear derby more than local lad Dan Burn.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Was this just unlucky or could Nick Woltemade have done anything differently?
The big centre-half could and should have been a key figure in the game, but he was brought off after around 42 minutes due to a collision with Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele.
Burn left the field close to tears, but he was able to walk away, at least. Now, we know just how serious his injury is thanks to an update from the Newcastle United manager.

What Eddie Howe said about Dan Burn
Speaking to the press after Newcastle’s loss to Sunderland, Eddie Howe was asked about Burn’s condition and he shared the details from behind the scenes.
“He was struggling to breathe at half-time,” he told the Chronicle.
“It was a big problem.
“Dan Burn has gone to the hospital for a check of his ribs, so hopefully he will be OK.”

Dan Burn blow is an opportunity for Fabian Schar
Burn was replaced by Fabian Schar on the day, and while we don’t want to see any Newcastle players injured, this does present a big opportunity for the Swiss defender.
Schar has spoken about his frustrations over limited game time this season, but it’s all about stepping up when you’re needed and making those moments count.
His time at Newcastle could well be coming to an end in the near future, but Schar can still play a valuable role this season by providing this kind of cover for the preferred members of the Newcastle squad.
