Alexander Isak believes he has a ‘good connection’ with Newcastle 31-year-old

Alexander Isak replaced Callum Wilson in the Newcastle starting XI on Sunday, but the 23-year-old has hinted that he would like to play alongside the number nine.

Eddie Howe made major changes to his forward line against Wolves, naming a completely new front three. Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron and Wilson dropped out, making way for Allan Saint-Maximin, Jacob Murphy and Isak.

It was a decision that paid off, with Isak leading the line brilliantly. He was arguably the best player on the pitch, and took his goal brilliantly. The club record signing now has four Premier League goals to his name.

While he has struggled for fitness, Isak has always impressed when he has played for Newcastle. And calls for him to start have intensified in recent weeks given Wilson’s struggles in front of goal. The 31-year-old has been out of form since the World Cup, scoring just once.

He dropped to the bench on Sunday, with his replacement performing brilliantly. It could prove to be a turning point, as Isak should now go on to be a regular starter for the Magpies.

That will delight the Sweden international, but he has suggested that he can play alongside Wilson rather than instead of him.

The £63million man spoke to the Northern Echo about Wilson after the 2-1 win against Wolves.

“We have a pretty good relationship and the few times we have played together, we have had a good connection,” he said.

“He is a great player.” 

Isak and Wilson have rarely played together

Isak believes he has a good understanding with Wilson, but they have only been on the pitch together on two occasions.

The first was the win over Fulham in January, where they combined to grab a last-gasp winner. Wilson cleverly picked out Isak, who scored the easiest header of his life.

Then they played 45 minutes alongside each other in the Carabao Cup final, after Eddie Howe made an attacking half time change at Wembley.

It is only in times of desperation that Howe has played Wilson and Isak together. Otherwise, one replaces the other as the lone striker.

But Isak has stated that he enjoys playing alongside the £20million man, and that is something for Howe to consider as the season goes on – especially against stubborn defences.
