Alexander Isak was Newcastle United’s hero on Sunday after he scored a late goal to secure victory against Fulham.

The 23-year-old was making his first Premier League appearance since September, and managed to grab his third goal for the club.

Fulham did a fantastic job of containing Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s side played well, but they could not find the breakthrough against Marco Silva’s men.

There were plenty of near misses, but fortunately Isak was able to break the deadlock in the 89th minute.

He had been brought on to replace Joe Willock in the 71st minute, as Isak and Callum Wilson played together for the first time. Howe deployed the club record signing in a slightly deeper role, playing just behind Newcastle’s number nine.

It was the two forwards who combined for the winner. Sean Longstaff’s wonderful cross found Wilson, whose initial header was blocked. But the 30-year-old was then able to stab the ball across goal, giving Isak the easiest goal of his Toon career so far.

A header from basically a yard out gave Newcastle victory, as Isak toasted his return to Premier League action with a goal.

After the game, Isak posted a picture of the wild celebrations on his official Instagram account.

The image inspired a few responses, with the likes of Jacob Murphy and Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga posting a reply.

There was also a message from Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi. He wrote: “Welcome back.”

Isak’s cameo off the bench against Fulham was his third since returning from injury, and it is clear to see that he looks incredibly sharp. He was unlucky not to score on his return against Sheffield Wednesday, and now he is back among the goals.

Having spent so much money on him, Ghodoussi is delighted to see Isak back in action. So are the fans, who roared the Sweden international onto the pitch for the final 20 minutes.

While Newcastle have been in excellent form without him, the £63million man has been a big miss. He now gives us something extra in attack, and lifts the pressure off of Wilson’s shoulders.

Sunday also gave us the first glimpse of how Isak and Wilson could play together. It worked immediately, with the pair combining to give the Magpies a vital victory.

Isak’s goal lifts Newcastle back into third. Combine that with Tottenham’s defeat to Arsenal and we now have a five point cushion keeping us in the top four.
