Journalist George Caulkin has shared what Alan Shearer had said to Dan Burn after Newcastle United’s 4-4 draw with Luton yesterday.

Burn left St James’ Park and headed straight for Shearer’s ball for The Alan Shearer Foundation where he met the man himself.

According to Caulkin’s post on X, Shearer was quick to poke fun at Burn’s performance in the game and the 31-year-old was believed to have taken it all in good spirits.

Shearer pokes fun at Burn’s performance vs Luton

It’s safe to say that it was not Burn’s finest moment in a Newcastle shirt after repeatedly getting beat down that left-hand side for an hour before being taken off by Eddie Howe following the fourth goal.

There were even chants from some supporters for Tino Livramento to come into the game which was harsh on Burn who has done so well for Newcastle in the last two years, but it was definitely time for a change.

Despite his display, the 31-year-old was still keen to make his way to the event where he was met with a ruthless Alan Shearer who was very quick to make a joke of Burn’s performance that afternoon.

When he arrived, Shearer said: “Shame he didn’t turn up at 3pm”.

Caulkin did, however, claim that Burn was seeing the funny side of things and it’s just a bit of a reminder that at the end of the day it is just a game of football and it was one poor performance that he’ll move on from.

Newcastle have the perfect replacement for Burn

It seems quite strange that Howe is so intent on keeping Burn in the team when time and time again his weaknesses are exposed by teams like Luton who have a pacey and direct winger to exploit the space he leaves.

It’s not to say that Burn can’t still have a solid role to play for Newcastle, in fact coming into the game he’d enjoyed good performances against Aston Villa and Fulham.

However, it was clear from minute one what Luton’s plan was going to be and Newcastle played right into their hands, it just begs the question if bringing on Tino Livramento earlier would have changed the result.

Livramento is not an inexperienced defender who’s not yet ready for the Premier League, we’ve seen him perform exceptionally well so many times this season against some of the best in the world, so it will be interesting to see if he’s given more of a chance in the next few games.
