Dan Burn has been one of Newcastle United’s best players this season.
It has been a season to remember for Dan Burn who has played in all but two of Newcastle United’s games so far this season. At 32, the big defender has been a big part of Eddie Howe’s plans this season.
Burn made his presence felt once against in Newcastle’s win against Arsenal on Wednesday night – it was yet another clean sheet against the Gunners, their third against them this season.
The defender was a big part of Newcastle’s last Carabao Cup final appearance and will be in line to play against Liverpool at Wembley in March. Burn may not feature in Newcastle’s FA Cup game against Birmingham City on Saturday – the Magpies will be without Sven Botman through injury, so Burn could still make the bench.
Alan Shearer praised Newcastle players for their work against Mikel Arteta’s side at St James’ Park. Any nerves on the night were eradicated when the Newcastle fans brought the noise to the stadium which seemed to shellshock Arsenal.
While Newcastle fans continue to celebrate their Carabao Cup success, Shearer has revealed a conversation he had with Burn after the win against Arsenal.

Alan Shearer reveals private text conversation with Dan Burn
Shearer was on a roll after the Carabao Cup win. Newcastle’s record scorer made sure to compliment several Toon players on social media for their performances.
Isak was praised by Shearer on Instagram despite failing to score in the win. Elsewhere, Shearer commented on Kieran Trippier’s Instagram post after his heroics against the Gunners.
On the Rest is Football Podcast, Shearer addressed the game and the performances of the likes of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, he then got onto Burn and revealed a text message he sent him the day after the win.
“Dan Burn, wow. Big Dan Burn again man. I text him today saying ‘god you’ve been amazing the last few weeks’.
“There were so many impressive performances from the players and particularly from the manager. He got his tactics spot on.”
Eddie Howe must keep Dan Burn at Newcastle
There is no doubt that Burn has been one of Newcastle’s best players this season, the 32-year-old has been a rock at the back at times and has proven why he should have been signed from Brighton in 2022.
The Magpies are now short on defenders after Lloyd Kelly joined Juventus on deadline day – Howe and Paul Mitchell may look to bolster the defence in the summer to improve the depth.

Whatever decision they make, Newcastle must keep Burn past his contract expiry in 2026 as he is not only a big asset on the pitch, but a huge influence off it as well.
The older he gets, the more influence he will have on the younger players in the team. The likes of Botman will be keen to learn from him given his age.
