Alexander Isak was among the goal scorers once again as Newcastle United beat Brentford at St James’ Park.
The 25-year-old found the back of the net in first-half stoppage time to give the Magpies the lead just before stoppage time, before Sandro Tonali’s wondergoal ensured that a penalty from Bryan Mbeumo meant nothing in the end.
Newcastle United moved up to fifth in the Premier League table with the win, but dropped back down to sixth on Thursday night after Chelsea’s 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Alexander Isak came off injured for Newcastle shortly after Brentford’s equaliser, with Toon boss Eddie Howe confirming Isak had a problem with his groin, admitting he was ‘not 100%’ going into the game.

Joelinton and Kieran Trippier also had injury worries; the pair struggled with knee and groin issues.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer was at St James’ Park for the win, where he enjoyed Tonali’s screamer in one of the Magpies’ boxes on Wednesday night. While it was a great occasion with the club celebrating their Carabao Cup win, Shearer noticed something about Isak that truly worried him.

Alan Shearer points out Alexander Isak fatigue in Newcastle win
Alexander Isak has undoubtedly been Newcastle’s star player this season, netting 24 goals in all competitions, including 20 in the Premier League.
Isak made history for Newcastle on Wednesday night with his goal, making him the first player in the club’s history to score 20 Premier League goals in consecutive seasons – a feat even Shearer could not achieve.
However, the injury concern could completely halt Newcastle’s progress. With a big game against Leicester on the way, Shearer pointed out that the Swede was not at his best on Wednesday night.

“Again, another 20 (goals), same as last season,” Shearer said on the Rest is Football.
“He looked a bit tired last night. I thought he had two or three really good chances, but got his goal just before half-time.
“It was a great atmosphere before the game, but I think as expected it wasn’t a great performance from Newcastle.
“But after what’s gone on, I guess emotionally and all those things it wasn’t going to be a great performance, it was just about getting the three points.”
Alan Shearer on Newcastle’s Champions League hopes
Wednesday night’s win keeps Newcastle firmly in the running for Champions League football next season. Despite already being qualified for Europe, Newcastle players want the Champions League and are eager to return to Europe’s top competition as soon as possible.
The Magpies narrowly missed out on European football this season. Despite finishing seventh, which was enough for the Europa Conference League at the time, Newcastle were knocked out of Europe without even kicking a ball thanks to Manchester United’s FA Cup win.

However, this time there are no Red Devils to worry about, so it is all full focus on the last nine games of the Premier League season.
On the Rest is Football, Shearer was asked by Gary Lineker about Newcastle’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.
“Yep, really good,” Shearer said.
“We’ve got a game in hand as well over the rest of them. I think the game in hand is Palace at home in midweek in a couple of weeks time.
“I think if they win that game and they keep winning, they can go above Man City and Chelsea.
“It’s looking really, really good. They’ve got an incredible chance to have a massive season. Obviously, you’ve already got the trophy so it’s incredible.”
