It would be fair to say that Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was not impressed by the club’s transfer business this summer.
Indeed, Shearer publicly described Newcastle’s rather underwhelming business this summer as a failure to Eddie Howe, who did not see his squad strengthened significantly.
Luckily, Howe’s side are not showing any huge signs of decline thus far.
While we remain at an early stage of the season, Newcastle are unbeaten in the Premier League and through to the next round of the Carabao Cup.
Performances could surely improve but the fact is that Newcastle have only dropped two points in their opening three league outings.
Signings would have been nice, however.
England defender Marc Guehi was a leading target and the failed pursuit of the Crystal Palace defender was said to have left sporting director Paul Mitchell fuming.
Guehi was in action for The Three Lions on Saturday against the Republic of Ireland and Shearer was certainly impressed.
Alan Shearer left seriously impressed by Newcastle United transfer target Marc Guehi
Reflecting on the defender’s performance in Dublin, Shearer said on The Rest is Football: “He looked good, didn’t he? I thought his passing was really good as well.

“I thought when you are fizzing it into the midfield when you have got to get through and break the line, I thought some of his passing was superb. Didn’t have to defend that much, but I thought when you are on the ball and you have got possession, then you need someone and I thought he was really good at that, yeah.”
Newcastle will soon make another move for Marc Guehi
The saga for Guehi ended in disappointment for Newcastle but that may not be the case going forward.
There are suggestions the club will go back in for the Palace star when the January transfer window opens, such is their desire to sign him.
Guehi was reportedly open to moving to Newcastle over the course of the summer, which should hopefully stand the club in good stead should they revisit the deal in a few months’ time.
Impressive performances at international level will only add to his price tag no doubt but it seems Newcastle will go back in for the player they missed out on this summer.
