Alan Shearer hails 'dominant' Joelinton for his performance vs Chelsea

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has named his Premier League Team of the Week, and praised Joelinton for his performance vs Chelsea.

The Brazilian is one of three Toon players to be named in Shearer’s weekly side for the Premier League’s official website, alongside Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman.

It’s becoming a regular occurrence seeing Newcastle players in Shearer’s team – in recent years it has been a rarity!

But with the way Newcastle are playing, there is no way their performances can be ignored. Howe’s men were fantastic against Chelsea, and deserved all three points.

The win made it five in a row in the Premier League, and ensured we will be spending the World Cup break in third place in the table.

Joe Willock scored the winner for the Magpies, and was arguably our best player on the night. However, Shearer disagrees.

Joelinton was Newcastle’s ‘standout player’ vs Chelsea

Joelinton has been named in the midfield of Shearer’s Team of the Week alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Martin Odegaard.

On Joelinton, Shearer wrote: “The standout player on the pitch in the victory over Chelsea. Dominant.”

The 26-year-old certainly was dominant against Chelsea, excelling in a couple of different positions. He started on the left wing, then moved into the middle of the park late in the second half.

No matter where he played, Joelinton gave his all. He was excellent defensively, and showcased the traits that have seen him become an absolute powerhouse in midfield.

He also showed off his passion too, getting involved in the post-match altercation. It didn’t faze him though, roaring in front of the Leazes End to toast a huge win for his side.

There were plenty of big performances in black and white on Saturday night. So many stepped up and delivered, which is why we were able to beat Graham Potter’s side.

Willock delivered the match winning moment, but Shearer thinks the man of the match award should have gone to Joelinton.
