Joe Willock scored the winning goal for Newcastle against Chelsea on a special Saturday night inside St James’ Park.
The Magpies have ended the first half of the season in sensational form, and will be in third place when the Premier League resumes in December.
Eddie Howe’s side have won five games in a row, including two victories against ‘big six’ clubs. First it was Tottenham on the road, and now we have beaten Chelsea as well.
It was a fantastic night against the Blues. It was a tight affair, but Newcastle were more than capable of imposing themselves on Graham Potter’s side.
We still needed a moment of magic to win it, and Willock provided it in the second half.
What a strike from Willock
The 23-year-old scored last weekend against Southampton with a lovely finish, but this goal was even better.
Joelinton lofted a ball over the top to Miguel Almiron, who did incredibly well to get away from Kalidou Koulibaly. The Paraguayan was almost brought down on the edge of the box, as his driving run fell into the path of Willock.
The midfielder’s timing was perfect, and with one touch curled it powerfully past the helpless Edouard Mendy and into the back of the net.
Cue absolute scenes inside St James’ Park and another stunning knee slide from Willock.
He was the match-winner, and took to Instagram after the game to comment on a special night underneath the lights. The former Arsenal posted a series of pictures of his celebrations, and of his man of the match award.
Isak reacts to stunning Willock goal vs Chelsea
Toon teammate Alexander Isak responded to the post. He delivered a simple message, simply writing: “Wow.”
Wow indeed. It was a special goal from Willock, who has now opened his account at St James’ Park this season.
Goals have been the only thing missing from his game this campaign, and now he has got two in two. Hopefully he can carry on this form after the World Cup.
As for Isak, he is hoping to return from injury immediately once domestic football resumes. Eddie Howe has confirmed that his injury has healed, so hopefully we see him back in a black and white shirt in December.
But for now he is drooling over Willock’s goal against Chelsea, just like every Toon fan.
