Alan Shearer believes Bruno Guimaraes will be a Newcastle starter for years to come

Alan Shearer believes Bruno Guimaraes can play a big part in Newcastle United’s future.

The Brazil international joined the Magpies in January, arriving from Lyon for a fee that could rise to £42million.

Guimaraes has been fantastic since his winter move, although the best is yet to come. We’ve seen glimpses of his incredible talent, including the stunning backheel volley against Southampton.

The early signs are promising, and Toon legend Shearer has been impressed with what he’s seen so far from the 24-year-old.

Shearer spoke to the club’s official website, and was asked about the most expensive January signing.

“Been really impressed with him [Bruno],” Shearer told NUFC TV.

“I think he can play a leading role in where Newcastle go over the next few years. Couldn’t get in the team to begin with because of the form that other players were in.

“But he’ll be a regular for years to come if he wants to stay here and play a part, which I’m sure he does.

“I like everything I see about him, I like his aggression, I like his passing ability. And he seems to enjoy this environment.”

Bruno is for the present and the future at Newcastle

From his first appearance off the bench against Everton, it was clear Newcastle have a real players on their hands.

Bruno is the kind of midfielder we’ve needed for years. He can protect the defence, but is also competent in possession to progress the team up the pitch.

Passing, tackling and scoring stunning volleys, there isn’t much he can’t do. And at 24, he still has scope to get even better. He hasn’t even fully adapted to English football, which is a tantalising thought for Toon fans.

He couldn’t get in the team to begin with, such was the form of Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock and Joelinton. It would have been unfair to break up that trio at the time.

But Guimaraes is the present and the future for Newcastle. With new ownership and fresh ambition, the Magpies could be on the brink of something special. The former Lyon man can certainly be a part of that.

Bruno will be hungry for success at Newcastle. He’s a Brazil international who has already experienced the Champions League. He’ll want to play in that competition again, whether it’s with the Magpies or someone else.

Hopefully this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship between Bruno and Newcastle. With the ability he has, he could go on to become a modern day Toon legend.
