Newcastle fell behind after an unfortunate own goal by Jamaal Lascelles, but the captain was on hand to get the team back on terms when his header the bar and then Mason Holgate before rolling in.

Second-half goals from Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier ensured all three points for Newcastle, and back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Eyebrows were raised when Eddie Howe named his starting XI.

It featured Matt Targett at left-back, but Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn were both on the bench.

Some had been very excited to see Bruno in particular as the club’s marquee signing.

But before the game Howe had suggested he was pleased with how the midfield had done against Leeds and decided to keep Bruno on the bench after just one proper training session.

In the end, he wasn’t needed, but he did come on for his debut right at the end.

He didn’t have time to do much, but there was once moment in the 92nd minute when he showed his Brazilian flair by the corner flag as Newcastle look to run down the clock.

He rolled the ball and did a stepover, luring two Everton players in before executing a cheeky backheel to his compatriot Joelinton.

Social media users lapped it up, as did Warren Barton, who simply wrote on Twitter ‘He’s a player’.

Exciting times for Newcastle fans as Bruno Guimaraes officially makes debut

He may not have started the game, but Newcastle fans left St. James’ Park last night delighted to have seen Bruno trot out onto the hallowed turf.

For many, it still hasn’t really sunk in that he has joined.

But he’s a Magpie. And although his cameo was brief, it’s clear that he is a player who is going to bring technical quality and flair.

It’s going to be interesting who makes way for him given there were so many great performances against Everton.

He surely has to come in as a starter. And whoever drops out after last night can count themselves very unlucky.
