Newcastle United’s new boy Bruno Guimaraes scored a wonderful goal against Southampton on Thursday evening to open his account. It was the Brazilian’s first start since joining, certainly a memorable way to make an impression.

The Magpies whipped in a corner and fellow January signing Dan Burn headed the ball into the six-yard box. Guimaraes flicked the ball with his back to goal past Southampton keeper Fraser Forster.

After going 1-0 down, the 24-year-old had turned the game on its head to make 2-1 to the Toon. The goal definitely matched the big money Newcastle put down for him, a £40 million (Sky Sports) goal for sure.

Guimaraes’ goal is up there with the very best first Newcastle goals

There have been so many memorable first goals for Magpies players over the years. Papiss Cisse scored a beauty against Aston Villa to open his account.

Another that comes to mind is Alan Shearer’s sensational free-kick against Wimbledon which he blasted into the top right corner. Guimaraes’ flick ranks right up there with all of them.

Some Newcastle fans may look back on that goal in the future as one of the iconic moments in Toon history. With the man from Brazil being their most expensive signing, the type of goal and that it was on his first start was like something from a film.

Furthermore, should the Magpies’ vision of a successful and long term project come into fruition, it could be looked back on as an early iconic moment.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game. The victory now puts Newcastle 10 points clear of the relegation zone and are now undefeated in nine matches.

Additionally, the Toon are now one of only two teams to beat Southampton at home in the league this season. Which is a real testament to how far they’ve come this season. Eddie Howe and the team deserve all the praise they’re getting.
