Alan Shearer completely disagrees with what Micah Richards has said about Newcastle’s team photo

Newcastle United caused quite a stir after their emphatic 3-0 win over Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby on Saturday.

The Magpies were dominant at the Stadium Of Light as Sunderland rolled out the red carpet. First they gave them an entire stand inside the ground, then they let Newcastle redecorate one of their bars.

That set the tone for a dominant display by Newcastle, who flexed their muscles and very much looked like a Champions League side taking on a team from the Championship.

There was no giant killing on Wearside, as Eddie Howe’s men coasted to a 3-0 win.

There was relief for Toon fans, who had not witnessed a Tyne-Wear derby win since 2011. The players celebrated wildly too, and Jason Tindall had a great idea to savour the moment.

After any win, Newcastle always take a team photo. It is usually in the dressing room, but this time they did it on the pitch in front of the 6,000 Geordies who made the trip to Wearside.

Toon fans absolutely loved it, but Newcastle have received some criticism for what they did after the game.

Micah Richards did not like Newcastle’s post-match photo against Sunderland

Micah Richards is one person who did not appreciate Newcastle’s celebrations, and he has commented on them on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast. He thinks what the Magpies did was ‘petty’, but Alan Shearer disagrees.

Richards: “Did you see that? Did you see who was instigating it? Jason Tindall! Wind up merchant!
At the end of the game all the Newcastle players have gone over to their fans and they are going wild and celebrating, and then you just see – it’s on social media – Jason Tindall is saying to someone come here. I don’t know what he is saying come here for and then it’s the camera person. So he gets all the lads together and they take a big, massive photo with the fans on the pitch and I just thought it was a little bit petty!”

Shearer: “Oh come on, what’s up with you man? In front of 6,000 Geordies who were waving their flags around! They battered them. Why not? Yeah, get them in there! Of course it was going to wind them up!”

Newcastle have the bragging rights over Sunderland

Was it petty? Perhaps but this is a local rivalry! These are the kind of moments that fans will remember forever.

Newcastle won on the day, and they earned the bragging rights. They did nothing out of order after the full time whistle – they just celebrated in front of the fans who made the journey.

If it had been the other way around, it would have been infuriating. But it is part and parcel of a rivalry.

For years, Sunderland got the better of us, and now it is our turn to relish in our victory. The win was for the fans, and the photo was a reminder of that.

Jason Tindall is already idolised by Newcastle fans, but the fact it was his idea to take the photo on the pitch makes him even more of a legend on Tyneside.
