Eddie Howe has spoken about the Bruno Guimaraes contract situation at this morning’s press briefing ahead of Brentford’s visit to Newcastle United tomorrow.

There was a lot for Eddie Howe to get through this morning after a two week break, lots of injuries to cover and speculation over player’s futures, but the elephant in the room was definitely the Bruno Guimaraes contract situation.

Stories broke during the international break saying that Liverpool had had a £100million bid for Bruno Guimaraes rejected, that was followed by similar stories around other clubs.

Eddie Howe has confirmed talks between Newcastle and Bruno

Then hot off the heels of all that speculation came reports of Newcastle and Guimaraes being locked in contract discussions with talk that the hold up was that Bruno’s representatives wanted a release clause inserted into his contract.

Now speaking to the media this morning, via Matthew Raisbeck on X, Eddie Howe has confirmed that talks are ongoing, saying: “Discussions are still ongoing but I don’t think it’s something that’s affecting him in any way… hopefully there’ll be a good outcome.”

For Howe to be publicly acknowledging the talks it suggests that a deal is close as he very rarely discusses anything until he’s confident of a positive outcome.

The talk of a £100million release clause has been a huge cause for concern for Newcastle fans, especially following rumours that clubs had already made bids of that much.

Release clause or not the fact is Bruno is signing a new deal and that’s a good thing

However, the fact remains that just because a player has a release clause, doesn’t mean they have to accept the buying club’s proposal and can stay put which I believe Bruno would … Unless an offer that was too good to turn down came along.

I definitely don’t see Bruno leaving Newcastle for another Premier League side, but any bids from Spain could be tempting for him.

The positive right now is that there has been no confirmation that a release clause is even on the table beyond his representatives pushing for it, so hopefully it either won’t be a thing or it will be set fairly high to put other clubs off.
