After Harvey Barnes, two Newcastle players could be back from injury very soon

Few will need reminding of how just how much Newcastle United have struggled on the injury front this season.

While having so few players to rely on across a number of different competitions may not be the only cause of Newcastle’s relative failings this season, it is difficult to ignore.

Still, things appear to be turning.

Clearly, Alexander Isak’s injury against Aston Villa is hardly ideal but it seems other members of the cavalry are returning.

Indeed, Harvey Barnes is reportedly in line to play against Luton on Saturday and he could soon be joined by others.

Newcastle injury news: Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson latest

According to The Chronicle, both Joe Willock and Elliot Anderson are close to returning.

The pair have hardly featured this season due to various issues but may soon be on hand to strengthen Eddie Howe’s options in central midfield.

Anderson’s back injury has ruled him out since the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace in October, while Willock played only six times before suffering a fresh injury having already missed much of the campaign.

Newcastle injuries: Big boosts for Eddie Howe

The return of Jacob Murphy shows just how much of a boost having more options can be. Not only do they give Howe more changes to make in-game, they afford many of the players who have been run into the ground this season some much-needed cover and competition.

Willock has been a big miss in particular. So impressive during the win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, the midfielder can have a big role to play in the battles to come.

Tuesday’s win over Villa shows what this team can be capable of. With more hands on deck towards the end of the campaign, hope of a grandstand finish to the season would not be unrealistic.
