It is fair to say a lot of us got Anthony Gordon wrong before his move to Newcastle United.
He was often the subject of boos whenever Newcastle played Everton, while he was involved in multiple heated confrontations with the likes of Fabian Schar, Kieran Trippier and many more.
So when talk of Gordon moving to St James’ Park emerged, a lot of supporters were not convinced.
But they are convinced now, with the 22-year-old playing the best football of his career. He is in scintillating form, scoring his sixth goal of the season against Manchester United on Saturday.
Next up is a return to Goodison Park, as Gordon prepares to take on his former club Everton.
He will be eager to show his old employers what they are missing, while he will also be keen to strengthen his claim for a place in the England squad.
There is no denying that he is a fan favourite at St James’ Park right now, with Gordon completely changing the way he is perceived.
He came across as quite unlikeable earlier in his career, but now Newcastle fans can’t stop singing his name.
That is a sentiment shared by Toon striker Callum Wilson, who has now shared what Gordon is really like as a person after getting to know him.
Callum Wilson admits that Anthony Gordon is such a ‘nice guy’
Speaking on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson admitted that Gordon really is a ‘nice guy’.
“Anthony is a top player and more importantly he is a top guy,” he said.
“Some people get a perception of players, especially him I would say, because of the way he plays and the way he comes across on the pitch.
“It’s one of them where if you didn’t know him you might dislike him but when you actually get to know someone, especially him, he is a real nice guy.
“I am happy he is doing well and if that kind of form continues that he’s showing recently then I’m sure that the next step for him will be England.”
Newcastle winger is a genuine delight
When you see him in interviews, he really is likeable. Gordon comes across so genuine, and that is perhaps why he is so endearing.
But there is no denying that he was a nuisance back in his Everton days. His passion often spilled over, with the winger playing with real anger at times.
However, he seems happy now. He is confident as well, which has led to him playing the best football of his career.
What is most exciting is that he believes there is more to come, which is exactly why Newcastle spent so much money on him at the start of the year.
Wilson is a huge fan of Gordon as a player and as a person, which proves just how right the Toon recruitment team were to bring him to the club.
