Jermaine Jenas has suggested that England manager Gareth Southgate can’t ignore Anthony Gordon any longer after the Newcastle United star put in another huge performance against Manchester United.

Gordon scored in his fourth consecutive home game against Erik ten Hag’s team and is really putting pressure on Southgate ahead of next summer’s Euro tournament.

Jermaine Jenas claimed on TNT Sports that it may only be a matter of time before Gordon is in the England squad if he keeps these types of performances up for Newcastle.

Gordon is in the form of his life for Newcastle

It’s been known for some time now that Gordon has the potential to be a quality player, but the winger is only now starting to really develop under Eddie Howe and is adding goals and assists to his game.

The biggest criticism the £45m signing was often his lack of end product, but now you’d struggle to pick out a significant weakness in the way he plays.

With Newcastle visiting Everton on Thursday night, the former Toffee will be more motivated than ever to put in a brilliant performance and show his old team exactly what they are missing.

As Jenas suggested last night, the 22-year-old’s performances are impossible to ignore and it is now surely only a matter of time before the call-up to the senior England team.

On TNT Sports, Jenas said: “Gareth has to give him serious consideration. He will still stick with [Marcus] Rashford for a period. But you can’t ignore what Gordon is doing. he’s adding goals, and assists.”

Gordon is streets ahead of Rashford right now

The argument for Gareth Southgate will always be that he wants to pick the players who are experienced and who he can rely on to play in big tournaments, but how do players ever gain the experience if he never picks them?

Southgate has had the chance to pick Gordon three times this season with the winger impressing for Newcastle, but he has been snubbed time and time again for the likes of Rashford and Jack Grealish who have been completely out of form.

Against Newcastle, Rashford looked completely invisible and when you look at the fact he has only scored one goal from open play in the Premier League this season, you wonder how he’s still in that England team.

Conversely, Gordon has now netted his sixth goal in the league and has racked up three assists as well, proving that he currently is just a more clinical and effective player.
