Newcastle United fans were reminded of a controversial incident during Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to PSG on Wednesday night.
The Gunners were knocked out of the Champions League after suffering a 3-1 aggregate defeat to French giants PSG at the Parc des Princes, but Newcastle United fans had their attention on a huge moment that could have seen the Ligue 1 Champions go completely out of sight.
The Magpies are aiming to qualify for the Champions League after missing out on European football for the 2024/25 campaign.
Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win confirmed that they will be in the UEFA Conference League as a minimum, but Eddie Howe’s side has their sights set on much more. Currently fourth in the Premier League table, pundits are backing Newcastle for a return to Europe’s top competition.
Alan Shearer is confident Newcastle will finish in the top five this season, while fellow club legend Les Ferdinand backed Newcastle to qualify for the Champions League.
While the 2023/24 Champions League campaign was a memorable one for Newcastle fans, a huge decision in the game between PSG and Arsenal had some supporters experiencing deja vu.

Newcastle United fans remember controversial penalty decision vs PSG
In the home fixture, Newcastle were unstoppable against PSG. Goals from unlikely heroes like Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff earned the Magpies a 4-1 win against a side that included Kylian Mbappe.
However, the away fixture was a completely different story. Newcastle went 1-0 up in the first half thanks to a tap-in from Alexander Isak. Howe’s men defended valiantly until the final minute of stoppage time, where the ball ricocheted off Tino Livramento’s leg onto his arm. PSG were awarded the penalty, which Mbappe converted.
A similar incident happened on Wednesday night, when the ball struck Myles Lewis-Skelly’s hand inside the area. David Raya saved the penalty, but conceded his second of the evening just a couple of minutes later.
After seeing the incident, Newcastle fans gave their thoughts on the incident on the social media platform X.
“That’s nearly as bad the Livramento ‘handball’ at PSG last season.” said one fan, while another added: “PSG getting another ridiculous penalty given to them, just like they did against NUFC last year off Livramento. None of them given by the actual referee btw.”
This Newcastle fan made their feelings clear on he decision, saying: “No love for Arsenal but that penalty decision is absolutely ridiculous. We had the same thing with NUFC last season.”
“The handball rule in Europe is a disgrace. Think Livramento in the same stadium,” said this shocked Newcastle supporter.
Another fan added: “On par with the handball penalty awarded to PSG when the ball bounced off Livramento’s chest. Both shambolic.”
Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “Livramento given a handball and concede a penalty when the ball clearly came off his stomach and then his arm. Even the VAR gave it. Unbelievable.”

How Tino Livramento felt about PSG penalty against Newcastle United
The decision to award PSG that controversial penalty effectively eliminated Newcastle from the Champions League. The Magpies went on to lose their next game against AC Milan at St James’ Park, finishing bottom of the difficult group.
Most Newcastle players on the pitch were adamant that it was not a spot-kick even before the referee went to the monitor to check it.
Livramento admitted he laughed at PSG’s protests, but admitted he felt terrible after the decision went against him.
Howard Webb called the decision ‘very harsh’ against Newcastle. The incident on Wednesday night going against Arsenal only reminded Newcastle fans of something they would rather forget.
