Newcastle United’s injury list is suddenly getting shorter and shorter.

Eddie Howe was able to include Alexander Isak and Joe Willock in his squad at the weekend, and it was great to see them back despite the defeat to Arsenal. It was particularly exciting to see Willock involved, as he had been out of action since November.

They will both hope to play a part against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup tonight, and they could also be joined by Elliot Anderson. He has been missing since October with a back problem, but has an outside chance of featuring at Ewood Park.

The local lad is back in training after a lengthy absence, and the same goes for another one of Newcastle United’s long-term casualties.

Matt Targett was back in Newcastle training on Monday

According to the Telegraph, Matt Targett returned to Newcastle United training on Monday.

He was involved alongside Anderson, having been missing with a hamstring injury since November 1st. Targett got injured during the Carabao Cup win over Manchester United, and has not been seen since.

But Eddie Howe recently stated that the 28-year-old was almost back in training, and that has proven to be the case.

The £15million man is one of multiple Newcastle players who have endured frustrating seasons. In fact, that has been the case for Targett ever since his move to Tyneside from Aston Villa became permanent.

Targett has had a lot of injury problems since signing in 2022, while he has also had to witness Dan Burn doing so well in his position.

But now Burn is struggling, so Targett’s return to fitness is a timely one. He could have an immediate route back into the starting lineup, assuming he can stay fit.

With Targett and Anderson now back in training, Newcastle’s injury list is suddenly much shorter. Nick Pope will probably be next to return, then after that it is Joelinton and Callum Wilson. However, their seasons might be over completely after undergoing surgery.
