Willock delivers message to Trippier after Newcastle beat Chelsea

Kieran Trippier was brilliant in Newcastle’s win over Chelsea, and has received a message of praise from Toon teammate Joe Willock.

The pair were involved in the moment that won the game for the Magpies, with Willock scoring the winner in front of the Gallowgate. It was an outstanding strike from the midfielder, and it was initially all made possible by Trippier’s intelligence.

The defender cleverly headed a long ball into the path of Joelinton, who was able to set Miguel Almiron away down the right. His run then found Willock, who thundered an effort into the net to give Newcastle the lead.

Eddie Howe’s men then battled to secure all three points, and guarantee they will be third in the Premier League when domestic football resumes next month.

Willock was Newcastle’s hero, but Trippier deserves praise for his performance too. The 32-year-old continued his rich vein of form, and will hope to take it onto the international stage with England.

Willock’s World Cup message to Trippier

That’s where Trippier is heading next, having been included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Trippier has always been reliable in an England shirt, and could be a key player for the Three Lions.

After the win over Chelsea, the defender took to Instagram to celebrate and then turn his attention to England duty.

He wrote: “Brilliant way to sign off before the World Cup. So proud of everyone.”

Trippier’s message received a response from the match-winner, with Willock sending some wonderful words of encouragement for his teammate.

He commented: “Wonderful player. Go smash it at the World Cup bro we are all behind you.”

The nation will be behind Trippier – especially those of a black and white persuasion.

If he can play as well for England as he has been for Newcastle then Southgate will be delighted. He has been Newcastle’s most consistent player this season, turning in 8/10 performances pretty much every week.

It has been a joy to watch him, and he excelled yet again in the win over Chelsea. He was so resolute at the back, and produced a decisive tackle late in the second half to deny Christian Pulisic.

We also saw his nasty side, picking up a clever yellow card to stop a counterattack. It was cynical, but intelligent from the £12million man.

While he isn’t the official captain, Trippier has led by example, and will now be an important presence in the England camp.

There’s no doubt that he will ‘smash it’ at the World Cup.
