Nick Woltemade wanted to be Newcastle United’s penalty hero against Union Saint-Gilloise, but instead it was Anthony Gordon.

The Magpies are up and running in the Champions League, picking up their first away win in Europe’s biggest competition since February 2003.

Newcastle beat Union Saint-Gilloise 4-0 on Wednesday night, producing their best performance of the season in Brussels.

Two of their goals came from the spot, with Anthony Gordon coolly converting from 12 yards on both occasions. He now has three goals to his name this season, all of which have come in the Champions League.

Nick Woltemade wanted to take second Newcastle United penalty ahead of Anthony Gordon

It is rare that you get to take two penalties in one game, but Gordon slotted away both of them with ease.

However, Nick Woltemade was actually eager to take the second one ahead of his teammate.

That is according to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, who was keeping a close eye on the giant German before and after Newcastle United’s second penalty against USG.

Hope noted on X that Woltemade wanted to take the second half penalty, but Gordon pulled rank.

He wrote: “Gordon makes it 3-0 with his second penalty of the night. Woltemade was comforted by Trippier in moments before the kick. He clearly wanted to take it. Woltemade first to celebrate with Gordon, though.”

Team player Nick Woltemade shows his class during Newcastle United victory

Woltemade’s reaction before and after the second Newcastle United penalty tells us two key things.

Firstly, the fact he wanted to take it proves he wants to score goals. While everyone is talking about Woltemade being a creator, there is a ruthless streak in him. That is why he wanted to take the penalty, with the £69million man keen to score again after netting his third Toon goal in the first half.

Secondly, the fact he was the first Newcastle United player to run over and celebrate with Gordon proves he is a team player.

There was no petulance from Newcastle’s most expensive signing, despite not being allowed to take the spot-kick. That is great to see.

It was an outstanding performance from Woltemade, who continues to enjoy a blistering start to his Toon career.

While Woltemade’s £69million price tag continues to be criticised, the big man is doing his best to prove he is worth every penny.
