What Jacob Murphy was heard saying to Fabian Schar on the pitch after Newcastle beat Aston Villa

It has been a blistering return to the Newcastle United team for Jacob Murphy.

The 28-year-old has now started two games in a row, having completed his comeback from a shoulder injury in the FA Cup win over Fulham. He did well that night, and continued his good form at Villa Park.

Jacob Murphy started on the right yet again, as Newcastle beat Aston Villa 3-1 to move up to seventh in the Premier League.

It was an impressive display from the winger, who thought he had scored in the second half.

A quick break from the Magpies saw Anthony Gordon play in Miguel Almiron, who had the awareness to fizz a pass across the box towards Jacob Murphy. He got on the end of it to make it 3-0, but replays showed that the goal would not have been possible without a deflection from Villa defender Alex Moreno.

Jacob Murphy does not think it was an own goal

Murphy was given the disappointing news immediately after the game on TNT Sports, with a reporter telling him it was actually an own goal.

“Ouch,” he said, laughing.

“12 weeks out for that!”

He was being interviewed alongside Fabian Schar, and the TNT Sports cameras picked up what he said to his teammate as they headed towards the dressing room.

Murphy told Schar: “It was never an own goal!”

Better luck next time for Newcastle winger

As disappointing as it is for Murphy, it was definitely an own goal! His effort was not going in until it hit off Moreno, whose misery was compounded even further when he collided with the post.

But Murphy celebrated wildly, while he made sure Almiron got the credit he deserved from the Toon Army as well. It was a brilliant ball across from the 29-year-old, who made his return from illness.

While Almiron will not get the assist, his role in the goal should not be forgotten. He did extremely well, particularly in the aftermath of speculation that he could be sold.

He put it on a plate for Murphy, who converted – via Alex Moreno. Sorry Jacob, better luck next time! He will no doubt get the chance to try again on Saturday, when Newcastle welcome Luton Town to St James’ Park.
