Newcastle United can consider themselves lucky to have got out of Bournemouth with a point on Sunday.

While Newcastle could well have scored more than the one goal they eventually mustered in their Premier League draw on the south coast, Eddie Howe’s side did get fortunate towards the closing sages.

Indeed, the Cherries saw a late winner ruled out by a controversial VAR call, one which Alan Shearer even admitted was exceptionally harsh.

That wasn’t the only slice of fortunate Newcastle got at the Vitality Stadium. Albeit they did perhaps deserve at least some given the dubious nature of Fabian Schar’s red card against Southampton last week.

Joelinton was perhaps lucky not to have been sent off for pulling Cherries goalkeeper Neto back by the neck when trying to stop a counter.

Howe has admitted he’ll speak to the Brazilian about the force of the challenge and pundit Troy Deeney reacted to it on Match of the Day 2.

Deeney admitted the incident didn’t “look great”, further advancing the argument that the Brazilian should have been sent off.

“Even for me, that’s bad. That doesn’t look good,” he said.

“He’s got him, grabbed him by the neck, quick throw.”

Before joking: “What I really enjoyed was the thumbs up he gave the referee just to say ‘yeah I understand but no problem’.”

Talked up by Howe before the game, Joelinton did not enjoy his most productive of afternoons on the south coast.

Not only was he caught out on the ball for the opening goal, but the Brazilian largely proved ineffective elsewhere.

Hailed for his performance against Southampton, the dynamism he showed last week was not there.

According to WhoScored data, the midfielder had the most unsuccessful touches out of anyone in the Newcastle squad (3), while he was also dispossessed a team-high number of times (3).

Clearly, he wasn’t alone in putting in a fairly underwhelming display.

Still, he’ll need to get back up to his best for the visit of Tottenham on Sunday. If he doesn’t, Newcastle could be set for another struggle.
