Newcastle United might have some work to do in the January transfer window.

Though its unclear as to how much the club can spend given FFP issues, both a midfielder and a new forward are said to be on the radar.

While there have been suggestions Newcastle fans should expect a reasonably quiet month and Eddie Howe has ruled out quick-fire signings, PIF have invested in every window thus far.

With that in mind, it’s hard to imagine the month going by without at least a signing, even if it is not a particularly headline arrival.

Indeed, one position could perhaps do with strengthening.

Newcastle 1-3 Nottingham Forest: Tim Sherwood names the type of player Eddie Howe is missing

Speaking during Sky Sports’ LIVE coverage of Newcastle’s loss to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day, pundit Tim Sherwood named exactly the type of player Howe’s side are missing.

After a number of Forest attacks, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager highlighted Newcastle’s lack of a No.6.

“Forest are pushing and there is no way Newcastle can stop the counterattack, they have no No 6 and are wide open,” he said at 13:41 GMT on 26/12/2023.

Newcastle transfers: Defensive midfielder needed

Bruno Guimaraes can thrill at times but even last season there was a suggestion those within the club knew he was playing out of position when occupying the deeper role.

The Brazilian has also previously stated his desire to return to a more box-to-box position, while summer signing Sandro Tonali wasn’t the answer as the No.6 even before his ban from football.

With no other midfielder signed since the takeover, it’s certainly an area the club are light in.

Kalvin Phillips has been linked but it seems Juventus have stolen a march on the Manchester City star.

Hopefully, the club have something up their sleeve.
