Newcastle United continued their winning streak against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

It was a tense affair for Eddie Howe’s side, especially after they went behind early on when the returning Sven Botman was beaten to a header by Dominic Solanke.

Anthony Gordon levelled the game just two minutes three minutes later before Alexander Isak scored his in his seventh consecutive Premier League game – only the third time a Newcastle player has done that.

Newcastle may feel hard done by after being denied a penalty after the hour mark when Gordon collided with Dejan Kulusevski.

The win keeps Newcastle fifth in the Premier League table with Manchester City yet to play.

The pressure was on for Newcastle’s English players with new England head coach Thomas Tuchel looking on. Gordon made the right impression with a goal but another Newcastle man is also bound to have caught the German’s eye.

Jacob Murphy impresses against Tottenham

Murphy has been in red-hot form in recent weeks. The 29-year-old has scored three goals and bagged six assists in 17 Premier League appearances this season.

He impressed in Newcastle’s win against Leicester before Christmas where he scored a fine brace. He also scored and bagged an assist in the Magpies’ win against Ipswich the week after.

He’ll feel hard done by that it wasn’t a seventh assist when his cross for Isak’s goal initially ricocheted off Radu Dragusin before the Swede poked home.

Murphy is just one assist off levelling his best tally for Newcastle with just under half the season to play.

There’s no doubt that Murphy is an outside choice for an England call-up but injuries to Bukayo Saka and Jarrod Bowen coupled with his recent performances are bound to put him higher up the list of options Tuchel has on the right wing.

Murphy played 86 minutes against Spurs and left a lasting impression with his 44 touches.

He completed 19 passes, created two chances, won two tackles, made three clearances, two recoveries, and one interception. (FotMob)

Lewis Hall and Dan Burn also impress

After a shaky start at the back, left-back Lewis Hall and central defender Dan Burn grew into the game with the latter putting in a big shift to cover for a surprisingly lacklustre midfield.

Hall received his first England call-up in November, making his debut against Greece. Tuchel knows the 21-year-old well thanks to the pair’s previous links to Chelsea.

Burn has never received a call-up to the national squad but could be an outside choice for Tuchel if he’s looking for a presence at the back.

Elsewhere, Tino Livramento, who also got his first England cap in 2024 had a solid game in his first start since December 21.

Tuchel takes charge of his first games for England against Albania and Latvia in March.
