Paul Merson has branded Miguel Almiron‘s goal against Leicester City as ‘unbelievable’ as Newcastle returned to Premier League action in emphatic fashion.

There was slight concern that the Magpies would lose momentum due to the World Cup, but Eddie Howe’s side have picked up exactly where they left off. They beat Brendan Rodgers’ side 3-0 and handed the travelling Toon fans a belated Christmas gift.

Newcastle were absolutely dominant against Leicester, and have now moved up to second in the Premier League table.

The Magpies blew the Foxes away in the first half, and already had a two-goal lead within the first 10 minutes. The first was a routine penalty by Chris Wood, but the second was an outrageous strike from the man of the moment Miguel Almiron.

He was Newcastle’s best player before the World Cup, and he is showing no signs of stopping this incredible run. He proved in a friendly against Al Hilal that he hadn’t lost form, and now he is continuing his Premier League heroics with his ninth goal of the season.

It is his best ever tally in a Toon shirt, and the latest unbelievable goal by the 28-year-old.

Merson reacts to Almiron’s goal vs Leicester

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson was analysing the game for Sky Sports News, and could not believe what he witnessed from Almiron in the seventh minute of the game.

“Oh my, what a goal,” he shouted, after seeing Newcastle double their early lead.

Merson then added: “He [Almiron] plays a ball inside for a one-two with Bruno who has got up the pitch.

“He’s took a touch through two players and rolled it in. It’s an unbelievable goal by Newcastle. And 2-0, they are blowing Leicester away with their passing and moving.”

Another stunner from Miggy

The £21million man is having his very own goal of the season competition. He has now got nine this season, and the majority of them have been top quality.

When he scored that volley against Fulham back in October, Toon fans couldn’t believe what they were witnessing. Now scoring screamers has become a regular occurrence for the formerly goal shy forward.

His strike against Leicester was a real team goal, and involved three of Howe’s best players this season: Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Almiron.

The way Almiron has linked up with those two players this season has made him a real threat, and that was evident once again on Boxing Day.

The combination with Bruno was exquisite, and summed up what has made Almiron so good. He now knows exactly where to run to get into dangerous positions. As soon as he finds Bruno, he is darting into the space to receive the return.

Then it was all about the Paraguay international’s composure. It was an accomplished finish by Almiron, who is clearly not going to be hindered by the World Cup break.
