Miguel Almiron proved in Saudi Arabia that his incredible form for Newcastle United can continue after the World Cup.
The Paraguayan started on the bench for the friendly against Al Hilal, but came on at half time to replace Jacob Murphy on the right of attack. And Miggy was easily Newcastle’s best player in the second half as Eddie Howe’s side went on to win 5-0.
Joelinton netted a brace in the first 45 minutes, then Almiron equalled him after half time. But his goals were so much more impressive.
The 28-year-old showed real confidence to score both goals. His first was the goal of the night, drifting past two players and shrugging off a defender who wanted to take the shirt off his back before firing low into the bottom right corner.
There were screams for him to pass, but he ignored them. And the finish proved he was justified in his decision.

Goal number two was also impressive. Almiron timed a run into the box perfectly, latching onto Sean Longstaff’s equally as perfect pass.
Miggy then side-footed it into the net – although you could argue that he was actually trying to find Dylan Stephenson at the back post.
Regardless, Almiron scored twice in the 5-0 win, and proved that his pre-World Cup run of form can continue heading into Christmas and beyond.
Miguel Almiron can continue incredible form
The £21million man was Newcastle’s star before the World Cup break. He scored eight times in the Premier League, and is the Magpies’ top scorer right now.
His performances were breathtaking – a complete contrast to his previous fortunes in a black and white shirt.
The work rate and endeavour continues, but he suddenly has a ruthless streak and constantly finds himself in goalscoring positions. He’s got confidence too, taking on shots that he previously never would have.
He was unstoppable in October, as momentum carried him like a wave. But there was always a worry that the World Cup could halt that momentum.
However, his goals against Al Hilal suggest otherwise. Sure, it wasn’t the strongest opposition, but you can only beat what is in front of you.
After the game, Howe described Almiron as ‘pivotal‘, and admitted that he doesn’t want the forward to lose any momentum.
His excellent goals in Riyadh should alleviate those fears. And they should serve as a warning to the rest of the Premier League – the Almiron renaissance is going to carry on heading into 2023.
