Newcastle United and Tottenham do battle with a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on the line on Wednesday night.

Eddie Howe’s side began the defence of their trophy by beating Bradford City in the last round back in September, recording a 4-1 win over the League One side.

Spurs, meanwhile, put three goals past Doncaster without reply to set up a heavyweight fixture at St James’ Park.

The Carabao Cup has been very kind to Newcastle United during the Howe era. They have twice reached the final and lifted the trophy for the first time in club history back in March.

As such, it would be a huge disappointment to see them exit the competition at a relatively early stage even if the Premier League and the Champions League are perhaps higher on their list of priorities.

William Osula impressed against the Cottagers and may be called upon if Howe wants to give Nick Woltemade a rest. Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga are all players who could start, too.

Spurs, meanwhile, are missing Cristian Romero, Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie. Frank may rotate, given the relentless run of fixtures teams who play in European competition are facing.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham prediction

Spurs have made a solid start to their domestic campaign. They sit third in the Premier League table, losing only twice.

Thomas Frank has brought about an improvement but the London club’s recent record at St James’ is poor, losing on their last three visits.

These are the nights Newcastle players tend to get up for, even if Howe will likely rotate some of his stars.

Newcastle have been so good in this competition that it is difficult to bet against them but it certainly will not be easy.
