Newcastle United had to come from a goal down to beat Tranmere Rovers 2-1 in the Carabao Cup second round.
Kieran Trippier made the difference off the bench, with his corners leading to goals from Jamaal Lascelles and Chris Wood.
It wasn’t a vintage performance from Eddie Howe’s side, but the most important thing is that we made it through.

Karl Darlow 7/10
Drafted in for his first appearance of the year, and produced a solid enough display. Lucky to escape serious injury.
Emil Krafth 6/10
First start of the season for Swede, but it ended in devastating fashion. Krafth was stretchered off in the first half and hopefully isn’t set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Jamaal Lascelles 7/10
Scored the all important equaliser for Newcastle, and seemed to be spurred on by the blood pouring from his nose. Deserves a lot of respect for playing through the pain barrier.
Paul Dummett 6/10
Did enough defensively, but weak in possession. Did well to get through 90 minutes after so many injury problems.
Matt Targett 5/10
Not a brilliant return from injury for Matt Targett. He was one of the players at fault for Tranmere taking the lead, and was replaced at half time by Jamal Lewis.
Joe Willock 7/10
The only player to retain his place in the starting XI from the 3-3 draw with Manchester City. Willock was lively, but squandered a couple of good openings to score.
Sean Longstaff 6/10
Capable of so much more. Longstaff played at the base of midfield, but was often sluggish in possession. Got caught out too many times by the League Two side.
Elliot Anderson 7/10
The youngster was given his first competitive start for Newcastle, and was really lively in the opening 45 minutes. He was our biggest threat, but faded in the second half.
Jacob Murphy 4/10
A really poor performance from Jacob Murphy. The 27-year-old did nothing to penetrate the Tranmere defence, and was largely anonymous. More proof Newcastle need another option out wide.
Matt Ritchie 5/10
Can’t fault his endeavour, but Matt Ritchie simply isn’t quick enough any more. Often made good runs in behind, but didn’t have the legs to get on the end of the pass.
Chris Wood 7/10
A quiet game, but scored the winner. That’s all that matters for the striker, who will be feeling the pressure amid talk of Alexander Isak arriving.
